Dijo conocer a Marta Baffigi y desconoció a Almeyra.

Final Four picks from those who really know

NEW ORLEANS — Sure, we could look at inexact reasons to predict the Final Four. Kentucky's offense or Louisville's defense. Ohio State's scorers or Kansas' shot blockers.

But why do that when the original tarot card reader of Jackson Square has an open chair?

“If it's not accurate, it's free,” Dino Adams is saying, asking only if he can take another bite of his cheeseburger before divulging how the weekend is going to go. “I've been on the square for 52 years. I haven't been wrong for 30.”

He relates how his gypsy mother had given birth to 21 kids, and two of his brothers, Louis and Vinny, had their ashes scattered around the square. He started reading cards at 10 and turned 62 Friday.

Excited about this weekend?

“I hate basketball.”

Who would be more objective to ask about the Final Four?

Ohio State vs. Kansas? “One team has a player playing with an injury now, right?”

Yes, Ohio State's Aaron Craft has been struggling with an ankle.

“That injury is going to give in the game. It's going to look like they're winning, and they're not. Kansas takes it. Real close.”

Kentucky-Louisville? “This is just a squash game. An outright squash. Kentucky's trying to make a point. When they hit Louisville, it's going to be like an atom bomb going off in an outhouse.

“The coach from Louisville is going to get himself in trouble. I'll be amazed if he doesn't get ejected from the game. He's really going to snap.”

The National Weather Service has issued a severe thunderstorm alert for Rick Pitino.

Now, the championship game.

Kentucky's got it. Big margin, too. I haven't been wrong in 30 years.”

Not to show the slightest doubt in Dino's claims, but let's get a second opinion on the tarot strip of Jackson Square. The card for Katie (Mambo) Heflin reads, “Online with the divine since 1969.”

She instructs to pick five cards, left-handed, and she'll look first at Kansas-Ohio State. “I don't know what this means, but I see a very strong man and woman, from the King of Pentacles.”

Who would deny the King of Pentacles during March Madness?

Maybe it's a player's mother. Anyway, who wins? Ohio State? Out comes the crystal pendulum swinging over the cards.

“I'm getting a strong yes.”

We have a difference of opinion among the tarot card readers on Jackson Square. This is starting to sound like a talk show.

Now Kentucky and Louisville. More cards chosen. “I see a very strong-willed man. The patriarch. The emperor. And I see his family.”

Kentucky? Kentucky. So how goes it for Emperor Calipari?

Kentucky is not going to lose. Too much will and heart.”

Kentucky vs. Ohio State. Crunch time at the tarot table. “I'll tell you this, in this game the lesson is to love the game and not to hold on to the outcome,” Katie says. “If you hold on too tight, you're going to get killed.”

She holds up the death card. Bad news. And the Page of Cups card. More trouble for someone. Sounds like Kentucky, feeling the pressure of expectations.

“This is squeezing the life out of it, the stress of it. It's saying if you don't play with the heart, if you play with the greedy perspective, you're going to lose. You're going to die like a dog.”

Will Kentucky avoid such a fate?

Katie gazes at the pendulum swinging over the cards.

“No.” No? Las Vegas shudders, not to mention Lexington.

“I'm sorry. I'd love to give you the other answer, but I trust what this says. I truly do.”

So Dino's cards say Kentucky over Kansas, and Wanda's cards say Ohio State over Kentucky. I say thanks, and leave convinced of one thing. Jackson Square is no place for Louisville fans.

Psychic Knows What’s In The Cards For Your Dog

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – When Julia Gordon-Bramer lays her cards on the table, she can usually tell you what’s going on in your life.

“You know I always had a Dr. Doolittle fantasy when I was little and it’s a way to talk to the animals,” said Julia Gordon-Bramer.

For more than 30 years she’s been reading tarot cards. Then she decided to trust her gut and got into the business of telling others about their primitive animal instincts. Meaning she reads cards for canines, “Being a pet owner and cat owner and person involved in stray rescue we were always getting these animals that we didn’t know where they came from.  We didn’t know what was going on with them, we just knew that there were behavior issues or something like that.”

For any animal owner with a wild animal, the wild card is trying to figure out what your pet is trying to tell you.

“I was just, you know, I was interested.  I’d heard of animal psychics and tarot readings but I’d never done one,” said Ellen Cook.

Gordon-Bramer has dabbled in divination for dogs, cats, birds, chinchillas, and even turtles. Her mission is to help owners understand behavioral problems or just the wants and needs of a pet, “The issues we see with cats and dogs is territory.  Love and affection, sometimes they have their best buddies.  Something terrible happened to her.  It looked like the greatest tragedy she could have experienced.”

That’s what brought Debbie Pond and her lab retriever Poppy who she inherited from her boyfriend who passed away suddenly, “And I just wanted to know how.  I mean, I’ve only known her for about four months before he passed away and just wanted to make sure she was happy.  And she missed him, as much as I do.”

Gordon-Bramer says she knows the cards are stacked against her when it comes to non-believers, “There’s always going to be skeptics.  What I tell people is that tarot is less spiritual and more psychological.  When I read for people I say I’m showing you what you already know on a higher level.”

That’s where she comes in to shuffle the cards, and give some insight to your four-legged friend.

Meaning of the Death Card

The Death card is one of the most widely misunderstood Tarot cards there is. Many times it is depicted as a ?bad omen? or a curse, particularly in low budget Hollywood shows and movies - however the true meaning of the Death card is rarely as ominous as it is made out to be. Yes, it often portends a major challenge and major changes, but it is also a card of new beginnings and transformations.

Death is itself a transition, leaving one realm and embarking on a new journey. In Tarot, the death card can be viewed much the same way. The end of one phase of life as a new one is just beginning. I liken the death card to the metamorphosis of a caterpillar into a butterfly. In order to make this transition the caterpillar must ?die? in order to be reborn again. After it's time in the cocoon is over, the newly formed butterfly struggles violently at times to free itself . It is a great challenge, but one with a purpose. The struggle to break free is what actually strengthens the wings of the butterfly so that it can fly. Without the struggle, the wings would shrivel up and the butterfly would die, never having taken flight.

When the death card appears it challenges the questioner to look at areas of their life where they may need to accept the need for ?death? in order to find new purpose in life. It is a reminder to use your struggles to strengthen yourself and to find the courage to spread your wings and fly. Without risk and without challenge there is no growth ? only stasis. It is the stasis, or unwillingness to grow and change that brings the death we truly fear. When things have gone as far as they can, we can either change and transform or perish.

When we focus on death in Tarot it is about focusing on life and rebirth. Often the death card will come up around very challenging events like divorce, illness, job loss and other situations that can appear very dire initially. There is a feeling of loss or deprivation that can cause the questioner to lose sight of the bigger picture. It's often difficult when our lives are changing radically to understand the ultimate purpose to which we are being led. At these times Death may be surrounded by a sense of loss or sadness, but it's important to remember that everything has a purpose and something to learn/grow from can be gleaned from even the most challenging of experiences in life.

Think of the Phoenix bird that rose out of its own ashes to begin again. When the death card appears to you ? it is time to reinvent yourself and move forward with a new spirit of awareness.

Oz urged me to read his future ...then the Tarot cards foretold his death

The burning Tower card, seen as the harbinger of doom, repeatedly cropped up.

It was one of a host of spooky premonitions she had both before and during hubby Oz’s fatal five-month mission to the Afghanistan front line, where he defused 70 Taliban bombs.

Today Christina tells of the dreadful day he begged her to read his future — and the moment she saw his destruction in the cards.

In her own words, taken from her memoir about Staff Sergeant Olaf “Oz” Schmid, Always By My Side, she writes: “Oz asked me to do his Tarot cards.

“The Tarot was something I did very rarely, perhaps once every other year. I wasn’t sure about doing it this time, but Oz urged me to and I agreed.

“I had done them since I was young and I seemed to be gifted. The card he chose to show the future was the Burning Tower. I did them again, this time for career, Oz chose the Burning Tower again. The worst card there is.

“It signifies death and endings, the worst outcome imaginable and entirely unavoidable. Everything you know gone in ruin or catastrophe.

Afghanistan ... Oz was killed the day before he was due to fly homePAUL EDWARDS

Oz looked stricken. He said, ‘I feel this is going to be a really bad year for me. I’ve got this feeling as if everything is slipping’.

“I tried to lighten it, saying, ‘You’ll probably just stub your toe when you’re at work — you’re always a screamer with loads of bad luck! Don’t worry, it might just mean that you won’t get a promotion or something’.

“‘No’, he said. ‘It’s not the card. That just confirmed what I already know and feel’.

“When it was my turn to choose a card I hoped I might get something that would lift the mood, but I was startled when I got it in my spread of cards, too.

Memories ... Olaf and Christina on a break at the seaside

“But then I got rebirth after, and the moon. ‘See, hun — always light in the dark. Remember that’, he said. I tried to hide my dismay. ‘It’s a dark time of year. Perhaps we’re both just feeling it’, I said.

“ ‘Let’s be positive, forget the cards, we’ve got lots to look forward to’, I chirped, waiting for him to follow my lead.

“He usually did, but this time Oz said, ‘No, it’s bad. I’ve got this feeling that if I go out after January or February, I’m not coming back. That’s what my gut is telling me’. There was nothing I could say that would cheer him and the truth was it was hard even to try, because I felt worried too.”

Despite the omen, devoted Christina put aside her foreboding when Oz was sent to the front.

During his dangerous deployment she would make a wish for his protection during the full moon.

But on the last full moon before Oz’s return she inexplicably fell asleep with young son Laird and missed her routine.

She writes: “I woke around 4am, disorientated. I was fully clothed and Laird was asleep on me, in his pyjamas. As the realisation dawned that I had missed doing the wish for Oz, the moon had disappeared and I felt distraught.

Happy family ... Olaf and Christina with son Laird and their dog

“ ‘Oh my God, what have I done?’ I whispered. ‘I’ve done it every month. Why now?’

“I told myself it didn’t matter, that it was just a bit of silly tradition, that I should forget it. But I couldn’t.”

Christina’s foreboding grew to fever pitch shortly before Oz, who won a gallantry gong on his tour, was due home.

The spooky signs grew to the point where she says she KNEW he was dead even before the fateful news came with a knock on the door from two officers bringing confirmation.

She writes: “Two days before he was due to leave Afghanistan for home, Oz called again. I could hear immediately that he was low.

“He had been out of contact for several days and he sounded shattered. He said, ‘Honey, I just feel really bad, I’ve got this odd feeling, like dread, I don’t feel safe, it’s bad. Have you got it too?’ I had. In the pit of my stomach I felt a lurch as he spoke.

“I had been uneasy, anxious, and had a feeling of dread, but I didn’t want to say that.

‘You’re tired,’ I said. ‘It’s OK, you’ll be back soon. Do what you did the last few months in the next couple of days, hun. You’ve got 48 hours left, that’s all’.

“ ‘Honey’, he said, ‘I’m mentally and spiritually hammered, I’m hanging out. I’ve been away too long, worked too much.

“ ‘And if it’s too much for me it’s too much for anyone. But I can’t let it show. I’ve got to keep positive and strong, they (the other men) have to trust me. If anything happens to me, I don’t want them to blame themselves.

“ ‘I wish you could come and get me. I need you. Just come and get me now, honey’.

“ ‘I wish I could’, I said, tears running down my face. ‘But I can’t. You’ve got to stop talking like this, you’re just tired. You can push for 48 hours’. ‘I need to speak to Laird,’ he said. I handed Laird the phone and he went upstairs and they talked.

“When Laird gave the phone back, Oz said, ‘I’m calm, honey, but I can’t help how I feel. I don’t think I’m coming back, ’cos I’m cuffing it now. I’m drained — it’s hard to explain’.

“The next day I kept the phone beside me all evening, hoping he’d ring. I wanted to ring him but I couldn’t, so that night I emailed — ‘Please email me, Don’t go out on the ground tomorrow, cut the last day, don’t do it.’ He never got it.”

That night Christina had a visitation in her dreams from another hero bomb hunter, Warrant Officer Gary “Gaz” O’Donnell, who had perished in the Afghan badlands disarming a Taliban device.

She writes: “I slept fitfully then I dreamed that Gaz O’Donnell was standing in front of me. ‘Don’t worry, Chris, I’m here to get him when he comes over,’ he said. ‘I’ll hold him. I won’t let go’.

“ ‘What are you on about?’ I said. ‘You’ve got no arms’. Gaz just looked at me and smiled.

“The next morning, Saturday October 31, 2009, I woke at 6.30am with a feeling I’d never had before. It was as powerful as thunder.

“ ‘It’s today’, I thought. ‘He’s going or has he gone yet?’ I felt it so surely that it was in the floor beneath my feet as I got out of bed and in the air around me as I went downstairs.

“I felt numb, suspended in time, as I went through the motions of life. At nine I phoned my mum and told her I wasn’t going to take Laird to his swimming lesson that morning. ‘What’s going on?’ she said. ‘You sound so quiet. Oz is home tomorrow, you should be happy’.

“I paused. ‘He’s not coming home, Mum, I know it’. ”

Oz was killed, defusing a bomb, on Halloween while Christina was walking in the woods gathering her thoughts.

At the exact moment he died she wept uncontrollably.

Later in her book Christina reveals more spiritual happenings. She tells how Oz’s spirit communicated with her through the spiritualist mum of a friend.

She writes what the spiritualist said: “He’s saying, ‘Coffee, white, one — man-up’. Oh, and what an awful taste, it’s something like liquorice. What is that?’ I smiled. ‘His liquorice rollies, the menthol tips, he always smoked them. And that’s how he talked’. She had his intonation exactly right.

“She always passes on an Oz message in his distinctive style.

“And it helps me to keep going and keeps me grounded.”

Will Jayhawks win the championship? Seems to be in the cards

NEW ORLEANS — Before Dominic the tarot reader will tell me the winner of Monday night’s Kansas-Kentucky game, he must know me.

I shuffle the tarot cards. I cut them into three piles and tap one for Dominic to read.

“The first three cards tell me the nature of the person who is being read,” he said. “I can tell you this, you have met your perfect match. Also, I will tell you that I see both of you together ’til either one of you dies, or you kill one another.”

Now I know Dominic is not playing and my $20 is well spent.

Dominic, a psychic for 30 years, welcomes sports questions. He is a football fan and gets many requests for predictions when the NFL’s New Orleans Saints play. Kansas fans are giving him some business during the Final Four. He gets none from Kentucky fans, who pass by his table and chairs as if the ghost of Adolph Rupp decreed him as unclean as the Louisville Cardinals.

“It’s really weird, this crowd,” he said. “In all my years of doing this I have never read somebody from Kentucky. I don’t know what it is, but Kentucky fans will not sit down with a tarot card reader. Crazy, but it’s true.”

I had my pick of psychics on Jackson Square in the French Quarter on a sunny Sunday morning. They lined the side of the square next to the St. Louis Cathedral as 11 a.m. mass let out, mixing churchgoers in Jayhawk and Wildcat gear with the musicians, painters, caricaturists and tattoo artists. Michael the Realistic Mystic wears a battered cowboy hat. Gypsy sisters Miss Cindy and Miss Rose sit next to each other under umbrellas. Rose’s sign promises, “The past as it was, the present as it is and the future as it will be 99-percent accurate.”

Next to them is a four-piece jazz band playing “When the Saints Go Marching In.” I choose Dominic and Kelleigh, warned by Mary Ellen at the Louisiana Office of Tourism that the state of Louisiana does not regulate, administrate or guarantee the psychic trade. She suggests I see the otter, who is also picking winners, at the nearby Audubon Aquarium.

Dominic quickly gets to basketball. He turns over the Chariot (opposition) and the Seven of Wands (accomplishment and overcoming). Kansas coach Bill Self doesn’t know it, but he is about to get some good news.

“I’m going to tell you I think Kansas is going to take this one,” he said. “And it’s probably going to be 78-62.”

At the other end of the square, Kelleigh is not directed to be so bold by her cards. She is handicapped by the fact I am not actually a Kansas basketball player, but does her best to divine the results of the game based on my knowledge of the Jayhawks and my concerns about the game.

She likes the outlook for KU’s strategy in the game, but is concerned about their communication and teamwork, as told by the Three of Swords. The Eight of Swords warns her that playing amid distractions is not a strong suit for the Jayhawks. The Six of Wands convinces her Kansas will play with great passion. She sees a slow start for the Jayhawks on Monday night, which fits their tournament trend.

“I think it’s going to be very close,” she said. “I think you’re going to be proud of your team at the end.”

Kelleigh predicts a big game for Kansas center Jeff Withey, whom the cards tell her is something of a romantic, comfortably forseeing six blocked shots by way of the Magus card. Dominic, however, predicts an ankle injury will strike Withey. In a better omen for Kansas, via the Chariot card, Dominic sees KU guard Tyshawn Taylor leading the game in scoring.

“He won’t miss too many,” Dominic said.

That would make Kansas fans Rosie Lammoglia, of St. Joseph, Mo., and Mark Ritter, of Salina, happy. They are already in great spirits thanks to KU’s somewhat unexpected success and their first trip to a Final Four. They’re watching the action in Jackson Square, wearing their KU shirts and preparing to see more of New Orleans.

“We’re in shock, but super, super happy,” Ritter said. “I didn’t expect we were going to play for the national championship.”

Lammoglia picked Ohio State in her bracket.

“We didn’t know what were going to do the next couple days,” she said.

Now they can enjoy the city while looking forward to tonight’s game.

“When we were down 13 (against Ohio State), we thought we were beat,” Ritter said. “We’ve been a second-half team all year long. This team has a will to win.”

On the steps of the Cathedral, Kentucky fan Rob Whalen, wearing a blue UK golf shirt, is hyped about his team winning NCAA title No. 8. He is glad to see the title game match two of the sport’s top programs. Upstarts such as Butler and Virginia Commonwealth cut into his enjoyment when they intrude on the Final Four.

“We want the powerhouse programs in the championship,” he said. “Absolutely.”

Whalen declines my advice to visit a psychic and gain insight into the game.

“No,” he said. “It’s not our thing.”

Too bad. Now he’ll never know what the cards foretell for John Calipari. For $20, it’s information no otter can produce.

Tarot Card Reader Brings Pets & Owners Together

ST. LOUIS, MO (KPLR) – When Julia Gordon-Bramer lays her cards on the table, she can usually tell you what’s going on in your life.

“You know I always had a Dr. Doolittle fantasy when I was little and it’s a way to talk to the animals.” said Julia Gordon-Bramer.

For more than thirty years she’s been reading tarot cards. Then she decided trust her gut and got into the business of telling others about their primitive animal instincts. Meaning she reads cards for canines.

“Being a pet owner and cat owner and person involved in stray rescue we were always getting these animals that we didn’t know where they came from.  We didn’t know what was going on with them, we just knew that there were behavior issues or something like that.” said Julia Gordon-Bramer.

For any animal owner with a wild animal, the wild card is trying to figure out what your pet is trying to tell you.

“I was just, you know, I was interested.  I’d heard of animal psychics and tarot readings but I’d never done one.” said Ellen Cook.

Gordon-Bramer has dabbled in divination for dogs, cats, birds, chinchillas, and even turtles. Her mission is to help owners understand behavioral problems or just the wants and needs of a pet.

“The issues we see with cats and dogs is territory.  Love and affection, sometimes they have their best buddies.  Something terrible happened to her.  It looked like the greatest tragedy she could have experienced.” said Julia Gordon-Bramer.

That’s what brought Debbie Pond and her lab retriever Poppy who she inherited from her boyfriend who passed away suddenly.

“And I just wanted to know how.  I mean, I’ve only known her for about four months before he passed away and just wanted to make sure she was happy.  And she missed him, as much as I do.” said Debbie Pond.

Gordon-Bramer says she knows the cards are stacked against her when it comes to non-believers.

“There’s always going to be skeptics.  What I tell people is that tarot is less spiritual and more psychological.  When I read for people I say I’m showing you what you already know on a higher level.” said Julia Gordon-Bramer.

That’s where she comes in to shuffle the cards, and give some insight to your four legged friend.

Stanley reinventing itself as a New Age hotbed

IT was a town built on grit, sweat and the blackened brow of men down the pit.

But the town of Stanley is undergoing something of a reinvention into a hotbed of everything New Age.

With a spiritualist church, dream workshops, astrology and tarot card readings, the County Durham town is becoming a magnet for mysticism.

One business boosting the area’s revamped reputation is Cauldron of Destiny, in Annfield Plain.

Customers at the West Road shop, which specialises in astrology and the Chinese art of i-Ching, can have their tarot cards read and their dreams interpreted, or tune into their skills in special psychic workshops.

Visitors to the Cauldron of Destiny, which shares its premises with the local hardware store, can browse a reference library of mystic material, including a comprehensive book of 5,000 spells.

Owner Rikki Blythe, 47, from Catchgate, County Durham, said: “We want people to know there are a lot of people who are interested in mysticism and spiritualism and finding their path.

“All these mystical tools are not predicting the future, per se, but they are about pin-pointing the energies that are surrounding you and leading the best life you can.

“Local people have been so open-minded. It’s brilliant. They are really keen to learn about what we are doing.”

In nearby Stanley, the Body, Mind and Soul Shop offers natural healing with the traditional Japanese practice of reiki.

Other activities include a yoga class, bereavement counselling, tarot and palm readings.

Also in Stanley is Ron Watson’s Hands on Healing practice, where he offers treatments like Indian head massage and reiki energy healing.

Ron, 63, who has run the Front Street shop for three years, said: “I have all sorts of different people on the books, from doctors to footballers, and people of all ages.

“I think people really like coming in and finding out about something a little bit different.”

In Tanfield, a spiritualist church called the Beacon of Light is home to mediums who pass on messages to the congregation.

And the mystic movement has captured the interest of locals.

A special event held at the Plainsman pub, in Annfield Plain, this week attracted crowds of visitors.

The mystic fair was so successful another will be held on May 20. “The response to our fair was so positive,” said mother-of-four Rikki.

“We had people coming from far and wide to get readings done. Stanley has this tough image but in actual fact there are a lot of open-minded people out there.”
